I have made it past a month with the 365 Picture Day project. I am super stoked.
Do you have a problem with your herbs dying? You bring them home in their package from the supermart, and 3 or 4 days later they have bought an untimely death. Herbs are expensive, and they have a right to life too.
(I have always thought it real funny that we have PETA – but he have no PETH – People for the Ethical Treatment of Herbs) Perhaps it is because the name is not so catchy. Hmm. I guess it is all about the name, right?
I hate throwing herbs out. I seriously hate throwing herbs out. I once did a cost comparison, and it turns out that most establishments pay 33% more for herbs than they do for the most expensive cuts of meat. Yet they throw herbs in the garbage while they wilt and die.
I remember having the sous chefs checking our garbages for scrap meats that we threw away, and serious trouble would brew for anyone stupid enough to drop sinew in the garbage with usable trim on it.
Ironically, you would see dead herbs littering the compost bins. The herb holocaust.
A while back, Nick over at Macheesmo sent me an email about his herb situation. Saddened by the loss of his coriander, he was compelled to make a better home for the disparate herb.
I came up with a DIY solution, and all seems well with the world. Today’s photo is of a bunch of Thyme that I bought 3 weeks back. A little love, some water in the bottom of the container, with the lid on. Look how green those leaves are.
You could get all fancy and buy those herb keepers, or if you are like me and don’t mid looking like a DIY’er, you can buy some olives at the grocery store, wash out the container, and use it for your herbs.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Herbs… has a good ring!
How has your DIY herb keeper held out for you?

Ooooo! I’m trotting right off to take a gander at your DIY herb keeper. I HATE throwing fresh herbs out!
@Jan – Sweet! Let me know how it turns out.
@Dawn – That is really cool. I should try that!
Hmm. I am looking into a DIY version, perhaps a post on that? What do you think?
