Definitely make it!

Make it or buy it?

By the end of this post, I will have you making yogurt. Not because it is the right thing to do, or it is cheaper. I will have you making yogurt because it is stupidly easy to do it.

I came across this funky site the other day while trawling through my RSS news items. A woman cooked her meals in a crock pot for an entire year. Then my eye caught a post about making your own yogurt.

I have failed with yogurt before. Epic fail. Not as bad as the last post here, but failure nonetheless.

The post promised I could do it in a crock pot. I was going to the Mother-in-law’s anyway. A quick phone call confirmed she had a crock pot. Like me, she is always willing to try something new.

Trip to the store:

  • 5.95$ for milk (3.25%)
  • 3.95 for yogurt starter
  • 9.90$ to start

I bought this lovely starter

The result?

  • I used 2 bags of the milk. (2.666L) = 3.47$
  • I used 15 grams of the culture = 1.98$
  • Total cost = 5.45$

Total yield: 3 liters – price per liter = 1.82$

Keep in mind that yogurt is sold right now in 750g (or less) containers (which is 750 mL)

I bought the flavored stuff for 2 for 5$

Price per liter = 3.33$

The flavor of the yogurt was out of this world. Nothing can compare to it. It was naturally thick, with no gelatin or stabilizers. It was not sour, just the right amount of acidity. If I want fruit with it, I can mix in whatever I want.

In the end, this is definitely Make It.

Stephanie has a great site! I followed her crockpot journey last year. It was fun to see what worked and what didn’t.

Haven’t tried the yogurt yet. But I can’t wait to try it. I have heard other people try it and with great success.
