a photo of the morning up North

The morning is still, and you can hear yourself think.

Everytime I go up North, I end up sleeping. My wife absolutely loves it when I do that.

I think that once I get to my Parent-in-Law’s house, the serenity of the location makes me relax. There are not many bustling cars, traffic, a-hole drivers, maniac pedestrians, noise, pollution or any of that other fun stuff to be had.

There is quiet.

Quiet is something that I miss from Jasper from time to time. For those of you who have been out in the wilderness, you know exactly what I am talking about.

I remember when I first arrived in Jasper, Alberta, it took me almost 1 month to fully sleep at night, as things were too quiet. You could actually hear when your coworkers were smashed out of their minds walking home from the staff pub, because there was no din to cover the noise.

You could go walk, and be deafened by the thoughts in your head. There is nothing that can drown out your thoughts, so imagine that they still scream for your attention.

Indeed, when I go up North, I am almost immediately tired, and want to nap. I am relaxed, and can let my guard down. I can reflect, and think about what matters.

When I first visited here, I did not understand why those crazy Quebecers always went up North every weekend. Why have 2 houses when you only lived in the second one for 2 days of the week?

It is all about escape. The calming feeling of nothing. That feeling is what we are missing a lot.

This picture was taken at the end of an hour-long walk with my dog. While he lapped up the river water, I snapped this picture. A calm moment indeed.

Do you have a place to escape? Where is it?
